Marble Arch, originally intended to be the entrance to Buckingham Palace, the monument was found to be too narrow for the grandest of coaches and was moved here in 1851 to become the gateway to Hyde Park.
Marble Arch stands near the site of the old Tyburn Gallows. From 1388 to 1793, when executions moved from outside Newgate Prison, London’s most notorious criminals were hanged here in front of huge crowds of bloodthirsty spectators.
